Next Week

Leaf Stamping

Explore textures that we find in nature. Paint a thin coat of any nontoxic paint onto a leaf and stamp it on a piece of paper. Repeat the process with a different color of paint and a different type of leaf. What happens? Compare each stamp. Can you see the texture of the leaf better if you stamp it or drag it across your paper?

Additional Resources

Butterfly Handprint

Using non-toxic paint, paint each of your child’s hands and place them onto paper to form a butterfly. When dry, your child may add antennae, wing patterns and other details.

Insect Movement

Movement is an important component of the creative arts, so encourage your child to move like various insects this week such as butterflies, crickets, or ants. The focus is on movements (graceful, fast, slow) and engaging your child in dramatic play by acting like a particular insect.

Billy's Playlist

Billy® the duck has updated his playlist with more of his favorite songs about the Earth! Click here to sing along!

Guess My Drawing Game

Play this fun art game with the whole family! Today one person will act as the leader in this drawing game and the other players will mimic what the leader draws. You may use paper or whiteboards. For example, put several simple shapes together to make your picture, such as a sailboat, car, or a caterpillar. As the leader is drawing, others will draw, and try to guess what it is. Take turns so all family members have a turn at being the leader!

Word Play

Young children learn about words through regular conversation, hearing stories, engaging in songs and rhymes, and word play. Recite nursery rhymes or other fun rhymes throughout each day to introduce your child to fun language play!

Animal Book

Using a book about animals, read together. While reading, point to the words and the corresponding pictures. Find an animal and notice what letter it starts with. Make the sound for the letter. For example, Oh, you see a fish. Fish begins with Ff. The sound of Ff is /f/ (make letter sound) as in fish.

Conservation

Consider how your family takes care of Earth. Take a photo of how you care for Earth. For example, planting trees that make fresh air, picking up trash that pollutes the land, recycling bottles, cans, and boxes that can be re-used, and so on. Have your child create their own original Earth-inspired story and share it with the family. Extend the learning: Learn more about recycling by exploring the books and videos on Scholastic’s Learn at Home.

Peanut's Playlist

Peanut® the pony loves learning words, and he likes to share stories with all the Primrose children. Click here to celebrate the Earth through conservation themed rhymes with Peanut!

Your Child, the Natural Scientist

What can we do to encourage children to explore and investigate their world safely? Try these activities with your little one!

Play in the Dirt

Believe it or not, playing in the mud can benefit children’s sensory development, creative thinking, and development of curiosity. Have fun making mud pies, yard castles, or start a garden. Just remember to wash your hands when you are done!

Spring Scavenger Hunt

Spend time in the great outdoors while also helping your child appreciate and observe the environment.

Solid or Liquid?

Mix cornstarch and water until it is fully mixed. It should appear firm (yet turn into a liquid as you hold it). Pour the substance into a large, deep pan and explore. Add a few drops of water every so often and see how it changes the texture of the substance. (A drop cloth and clothing covering are recommended, as this is a messy but fun activity!)

Catching

Hold a scarf or tissue down by your knee. Then raise your hand high into the air and let go of the scarf. As the scarf comes down, catch it with both hands. What other place around your body can you catch the scarf?

Move like a Bug

Have your child cut out the bugs on the activity sheet. Then, have them move the paper bugs in ways like a real bug would (zig zag, backward, and so on).

Recyclable Stackers

Using recycled cereal boxes or plastic containers of various sizes, stack the items inside of each other like nesting blocks.

Butterfly Dot Math

Using the butterfly activity sheet, your child may either use their thumbprint and paint to make dots on each butterfly wing or use a crayon or marker to draw dots. Count the dots together when the butterflies are dry.
