At the Beach

This week, children have lots of fun engaging in beach-themed activities. Children also explore ways to be responsible with Primrose Friend, Ally the bunny.

It's never too early to help your child develop positive character traits. The highlighted activities throughout this week's unit and additional resources infuse character development lessons that help foster compassion, creativity, gratitude and honesty in children.

Fishing with George

George likes to go fishing, do you? Help George fish by casting the line and reeling in the fish. Then help him sort the fish into tanks by size or color. Note: this activity works best on a mobile device.

Play Now

Each week, Primrose early education experts curate games, videos, and activities that align with our weekly Online with Og theme with our partners at Curious World. As a reminder, there’s no cost to play the games for Online with Og users.

Curious George Undersea Explorer

Og's Story Time

Listen to "The Hula Hoopin’ Queen" by Thelma Godin (read by Oprah Winfrey) and then complete the additional activities below:

•  Kameeka loves to hula hoop! Make a list of two things you absolutely love to do. Next, list two things you would like to do better or would like to learn.

• When we are responsible, other people can rely on us. Write an apology letter from Kameeka to her mother and Miz Adeline for hooping instead of going to the store. Explain what you will do to be more responsible next time.

Message in a Bottle

Gather a clean, empty plastic bottle, small slips of paper, and markers. Write a way to be responsible this week on each slip of paper and place the paper inside the bottle. Place the lid on the bottle. Each day, go to your bottle and remove one slip of paper. Follow the responsibility message for the day. Choose a new one tomorrow. Repeat each day.

Parent Resources

•  Summer is beach time! The American Red Cross article, Swimming Safely at the Beach, has some important tips to help keep your family safe at the beach.

• Teaching the importance of physical activity at a young age can help children establish lifelong healthy habits. For tips on appropriate exercises for young children, read Physical Challenge: Parent and Child Exercise Ideas, by Dr. Steve Sanders.

Venture (Ages 3-7)

Fish Masks

Using the Fish Mask template, cut out and decorate the masks. Design your own play about a family of fish (or “school” of fish) living in the ocean. What fun adventures will the fish have together? Act out the play for family members.

The activities in this section are best suited for children ages 3 and up and cover a variety of learning domains. Fill out the daily schedule template available below and for more fun, add in some of the additional resources available when you download "More Activities."

Responsibility at the Beach

It is important to be responsible, especially when at the beach! Print and cut out three beach balls using the Beach Ball template. On each beach ball, write a reminder of one way to be responsible this week (example: I will clean up after I play beach party picnic). Post the beach ball reminders around the house so you remember ways to be responsible throughout the week.

Beach Scavenger Hunt

Create a pretend “beach” using child-safe play sand, water, and rocks or other “treasures." Place all the items into a shallow container. Hide various small “treasures” in the sand, and let the mixture sit until the sand settles at the bottom and water is clear. Search for the hidden treasures by carefully digging with a spoon. What treasures did you find? Note: This activity may be messy and is best suited for outdoor play.

Beach Ball Bump

Using a beach ball (or other light ball), throw the ball up in the air and then use your hands to push it back into the air. How many times in a row can you bump the ball to keep the ball up in the air?

Fish Seriation

Print the Fish templates and cut out all fish. Color the fish any way you like. Place all the fish in order by size from smallest to largest. Next, mix up the fish and place in order from largest to smallest. Group the fish by small size, medium and large size. How many fish are in each size group?

Fish Friends Dance

Cut out the fish masks and color each one. Wear them as you dance to beach-themed music! Invite a friend or family member to dance along with you.

Beach Party Invitation

Using the beach stationery, create an invitation to your beach party “picnic” for family members or friends. Remember to let them know how important they are, and why you would love to have them attend!

Beach or Water Jump

Place a tape line on the floor (or sidewalk). Pretend one side of the line is the ocean and the other side is the beach. Jump over the line into the ocean and jump up and down in the “water” until someone says “shark” and then jump back over the line to the beach.

Modeling Dough Seashells

It is fun to walk the beach to see how many types of shells you can find! To make your own pretend shells, mix up some modeling dough and form small shell shapes. Make lines and designs like real shells. When your shells are dry, you can paint them to look like real seashells. Create a path of shells and pretend to walk the beach picking up your shells. Don’t forget to take a bag or net to put your found shells into.

Shapes at the Beach

Using the shape template and markers, make each shape into something you would see at the beach. Add additional shapes (example: star for starfish, diamond for kite, etc.) and make more beach-related images. How many shapes can you make into objects at the beach?
