Zoom, Vroom! Things in Motion

From balls to our own bodies, this week children explore the physics of how things move. Children also learn ways to be responsible from our Primrose Friend, AllySM the bunny.

It's never too early to help your child develop positive character traits. The highlighted activities throughout this week's unit and additional resources infuse character development lessons that help foster compassion, creativity, gratitude and honesty in children.

Og's Story Time

An acorn falls on Chicken Little's head and he thinks the sky is falling! He and his friends run to tell the king, but what happens when they meet up with sly Foxy Loxy? (After listening to the story, try the activities below):

• Draw a picture to show how Chicken Little can keep his head safe from falling objects.

• We know the sky can't actually fall, but what do you think might happen if the sky could fall on Chicken Little? Create a fiction, or pretend story and share it with your family.

Ways to be Responsible

Using the Helper Chart, discuss two ways your child can help show responsibility each day (such as helping fold laundry, picking up toys, etc.). Draw both items in the first column. Throughout the week, as your child accomplishes these tasks, encourage your child to place a checkmark in the box. At the end of the week, count all of the ways your child helped and showed responsibility!

Parent Resources

•  Playing with SoundsDaily word and sound play are important ways to build phonological awareness, a critically important early literacy skill. Read more about how to develop this skill at home in the article, Playing With Sounds: Developing Phonological Awareness. As you travel around the neighborhood or on vacation, take advantage of conversation times and introduce new vocabulary or engage in word play.

• Summer is here! Check out the resource, Summer Fun, by Zero to Three for a list of fun things to do indoors and outdoors (even on a rainy day).

• Movement is an important part of a young child’s development. This Zero to Three article, On the Move: The Power of Movement in Your Child’s First Three Years, discusses how movement enhances overall development.

 • Most of us are aware how movement helps build healthy bodies, but did you know movement also helps build healthy brains? This Penn State article, Movement Builds a Child’s Brain, has some interesting research about the connection between movement and cognitive development.

Venture (Ages 3-7)

Stomp Music

Moving your body can make music! Gather a variety of recycled materials, such as lids from plastic containers, plastic spoons, cardboard, etc. How can each item make sounds as you move your body? For example, tap it on your shoe. Describe the sound you hear. Tap it with your fingernails. How is that sound different from the first? Can you combine a couple recycled items to make music as a one-person band? Ask other family members to join in on the fun!

The activities in this section are best suited for children ages 3 and up and cover a variety of learning domains. Fill out the daily schedule template available below and for more fun, add in some of the additional resources available when you download "More Activities."

Letter or Not Obstacle Course

Print the Letter or Not a Letter activity sheet and cut out each square. Make an obstacle course in the back yard by placing all the squares in random places. Make two spaces to place letters and non-letters (hula hoops, chalk circles, boxes). When the timer starts, run around and gather all of the letters and non-letters and quickly place them into the correct place. Can you play again and beat your time?

Dual Ball Roll

Gather 2 different sized balls and recycled materials such as cardboard to make two ramps. Make the ramps the same size, slope, and height. Predict which ball will go the farthest if released at the same time. Roll both balls at the same time and see what happens. Was your prediction correct? Why do you think one ball went farther than the other one? Can you modify the ramps so the balls go the same distance?

Juggling Jokester

Give your child two scarves. The goal of the game is to try to keep both scarves in the air. If a scarf hits the ground, make up a knock-knock joke and tell it to another person.

Shape Surprise!

Using the Shape Assortment activity sheet, cut out the shapes. Name each shape as you cut it out. Arrange the shapes on paper to create your own surprise design and then glue the design to paper to display.

Dance with a Friend

There is nothing more fun than dancing with a friend! Show how much you care by hosting a virtual “dance party” with a couple friends or family members. Play their favorite songs and create fun dances together.

Fine Motor Fun

Fine motor tasks help strengthen children’s muscles needed for writing. This week, your child can “sew” cardboard. Poke holes in a piece of recycled cardboard. Use yarn with a taped end (the tape will form a stiff end so that your child can push the yarn into each hole). After a little practice, “sew” a gift for a family member to show them how much you care for them!

Mia's Workout Video

Let's get moving! Mia the Mouse has made a short workout video to help get the wiggles out!

Box Golf

Create a golf course using small balls and recycled cardboard boxes. To play, place each cardboard box on its side. Gently roll the balls and see which cardboard box they go into. Can you get a ball to roll into each box?

Beehive Counting

Draw a large beehive on paper and cut it out. Gather number dot cards and bee finger puppets. To play, draw one number dot card and place the corresponding number of bees in the hive. Play several more times with other numbers.
