Up in the Sky!

This week, children explore air transportation, including airplanes, rockets, and parachutes! Children learn that respecting others is another way to be a good citizen. 

Activities focusing on the development of important character traits, such as responsibility, citizenship, and keeping promises, are highlighted throughout this week's unit and additional resources. If you have questions or comments on this site, click here

Curious World: Number Rumble! Rockets 

Let's get ready to Number Rumble with...Rockets! Sing along with Rebecca as you count together to 20! 

Kindness Kite

Using the kite template, cut out the kite and a bow. On the bow, write something kind you promise to do this week for a family member or friend. Glue the bow to the kite. Hang the kite where you can see it each day, so you remember to keep your promise.

Curious World: Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon 

George and the man with the yellow hat arrive at Mt. Rushmore just in time for the hot air balloon races! Whisked up, up, up, and away, join George on a surprising high-flying adventure! After reading, complete the following activities:

• Draw a picture to show 2 ways you would help get George out of the hot air balloon safely.

  George sometimes forgets to be responsible and follow the rules. What are some rules at home you sometimes forget to follow? Write a plan to help remind yourself how to follow the rules. 

Flying High for Friendship

Using the airplane template, draw a picture for a friend you have not seen in a while. Create a paper airplane and send it in the envelope along with your picture. Your friend will appreciate the gift.

Recycled Paper Fan Wind Power

Choose 2 light objects made from different materials (such as a tissue and thin paper, etc.). Using a recycled paper fan, see how far you can move each object. Which one moves the farthest? What happens if you move your paper fan fast versus very slow? Try moving other objects with your paper fan. What do you notice?

Did you ever wonder how to land on Mars? It takes a lot of skill and work. See how engineers safely land a rover on Mars.

Curious World: Nico Can Dance: The Sun

Miss Frost and Nico make the sun shine. 

Rocket Jump

Can you jump up high like a rocket? Jump on two feet and then try to jump on one foot. Did you go higher with one or two feet? Can you think of other ways to help yourself jump higher?

Helicopter Patterns

Using the Helicopter Patterns template, color each helicopter in a row a different color to create a simple A, B pattern.  In the next row, create a new pattern (continue with A, B patterns or move to more complex patterns if ready).

Rocket Path

Using the directional arrows, numeral cards, and rocket template, cut out each item. To play, pretend you are a rocket and choose one direction card and one numeral card at a time. Move that number of steps in the direction selected. Then choose two different cards and move accordingly.

Og's Story Time

This week, actress Rashida Jones is reading "Please Please the Bees" by Gerald Kelley (from Storyline Online). After reading along, pretend you are Benedict. Write a letter to the bees apologizing and let them know how you plan to help them. Next, draw a plan to make Benedict’s yard better for the bees. Think about what bees need and include all their basic needs. Then, read about Honey bees from National Geographic Kids and write 3 new facts you learned in your Exploration Journal.

Checking the Weather with Benjamin®

Benjamin the bear is happiest when he is playing outdoors! Have your child look out the window and give a weather report for the day with Benjamin. Sing along here!

#PaperPercyChallenge

Fly, Percy, fly! Create a paper airplane using your own design (or borrow one from Audubon Society or Fold' N Fly). Decorate the appropriately-sized Percy from the template and glue him to the airplane and take a photo before sending the plane into the air. Share your creation and be sure to tag  @PrimroseSchools with #PaperPercyChallenge on Instagram

Respect for Others

Read Fuzz and Curly by Russell Ginns. After reading, complete the following activities:

• Are you more like Fuzz or Curly? Draw a picture to tell why. 

  Fuzz and Curly have many differences but they still love each other. Using the Respect for Others template, draw a picture and write about how you can respect others who are different from you and why it is important.
